Candidates often face many questions about their experience, qualifications, and circumstances. But what if the process could be smoother and more personalized? With conditional logic, you can tailor questions so candidates see only what’s relevant. By automatically hiding or showing specific questions based on their previous answers, you are not just saving them time but you are creating an intuitive and seamless experience where unnecessary questions don’t even appear.

We are all about the candidate experience! Be mindful not to overwhelm them with too many unexpected additional questions.

How it works

Instead of presenting all questions upfront and making candidates navigate irrelevant ones, conditional logic helps you guide them step by step. For example:

Let’s say you ask: "Are you available to start immediately?" with options Yes or No.

  • If the candidate answers No, a follow-up question appears: "What is your earliest available start date?"

  • If they answer Yes, the follow-up is skipped.

This way, the form adapts dynamically to their answers, keeping it relevant and efficient.

What question types you can use

The question asking for additional information can be any type. However, the main question must be one of the following types:

  • Yes / No

  • (Single) Choice

Once a question with that type has been added, you will be able to select it to be related to your secondary question.

How to set it up

Application form

To use this feature in the application form, add the questions to the application form in the job editor. Select either from your existing questions or create new ones. Then click on the three dots within the question you wish to use as a follow-up, and enable Use conditional logic.

Now you can select which question it should be attached to and which answer the candidate needs to give for it to show. The additional question will only appear under these conditions.

Questionnaire

You can also use it when asking a candidate questions directly by sending a questionnaire. Open the Messages tab in the candidate card directly, attach the questions to your message, and click on the three dots next to the question that should otherwise stay hidden to enable the conditional logic. Here, select the condition - the answer needed for the question to be shown.

Surveys

In our Add-on feature Surveys, you can find the option to use conditional logic as soon as one Single choice question has been added. This question type is the one available in surveys to be used as a basis for the follow-up questions. You can read more about this feature in our guide here.

💡 Note that questions will show in the order they are added. For eg. if a question is added between the main question and the conditional one, it will be displayed in that same order for the candidate.

Add multiple questions to an answer

You can link several questions to one specific answer to get all the information you need. Once the candidate gives that answer, all the connected questions will appear at the same time.

You can also create a chain of questions so that additional information is asked based on a specific answer in the follow-up question.

This is how it can look for the candidate answering the questions in the application form:
